What is DVD?

• ‘DVD’ is a digital versatile disc.

• It looks exactly like a CD, but unlike CD it also contains visual data.

• The disc has from seven to fourteen times capacity of a normal CD.

What does a DVD disc play on?

• DVD discs will play on a DVD machine or on PC’s that have a DVD Rom drive and a DVD card. The cost for either option is approximately the same.

• CD’s will also play on the DVD machine or PC.

Picture Quality

• VHS video has approximately 350 lines of resolution whereas DVD can have up to 625.

Audio Quality

• DVD hardware has ‘AC3’ or ‘Dolby Digital’, which gives 5.1 channels of sound. This is made up of a centre speaker, two front speakers, two true stereo rear speakers and a sub woofer.

DVD formats

• DVD5 – Single Sided Disc – allows approximately 120 minutes of audio and visual running time.

• DVD10- Double Sided Disc – allows approximately 120 minutes of audio and visual running time on each side of the disc.

• DVD9 – Dual Layer Disc – two layers on one side allowing approximately 240 minutes of non-interruptive play.

• DVD18- Double Sided Dual Layer Disc – allows approximately 240 minutes of running time on each side.

 What can a DVD disc do?

It gives you the opportunity of watching the film with many added features*:

• Quality of sound and picture second to none.

• The opportunity of viewing selected scenes from up to nine different camera angles.

• Being able to access immediately (like an audio CD) different parts of the film.

• The opportunity of accessing biographies/interviews from members of the cast and crew.

• Music DVD titles can be played just like a CD with the television switched off.

• Immediate translation into up to eight different languages.

• The choice of up to thirty-two different languages for subtitles.

The contents and interactivity of the disc is dependent upon what the video studio chooses to include.
